\(\LaTeX\) is typography. It can be use to change fonts, colors, spacing, as well as to invoke special characters and symbols. It is really used to compose whole books by both dead-tree and electronic publishers. And it (or parts of it) are useful on websites to compose mathematical and scientific formulas, and in other situations where many unusual characters, colors, and fonts are mixed in expressions.

Drawing pictures with characters in general is called ASCII art. ASCII art, is well, an art of its own. You can learn about how to make shapes with characters by studying ASCII art.
