If cos θ=–513 and sin θ < 0, what is tan θ ? A. (12/5) B.(13/5) C. (-12/5) D.(√194/5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here both cos and sin are -ve menas the angle is in third quadrant and henc tan must be positive .. are you getting A ?

The question is supposed to say if If cos θ=(–5/13) and sin θ < 0, what is tan θ ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I know it is supposed to be positive I just have no idea how to calculate the actual answer.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Draw a right triangle and add in the angle \(\Large \theta\) (pronounced theta) |dw:1405569319064:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

cos θ = –5/13 is given to us in general, cosine is adjacent/hypotenuse so... |dw:1405569407409:dw| I'm making every side positive since these are lengths of the sides of a triangle
