After reading the story, you literally just need to write a flashback in a couple of sentences. either from the tortoise or the hare's point of view.

Example (from the hare's point of view):

"The tortoise is so slow upon his feet.  There is no way I could lose a race against someone as slow as he is!  Or so I thought. When I awoke from my nap.." and so forth... .
