The following molecule is called 2-ethylbutane? Can someone describe it to me please.

OpenStudy (abmon98):

Counting the carbon atoms But- 4 C Counting the carbon atoms an- only C-C single bonds butane means four carbons in a chain with no double bond. Alkyl groups Compounds like methane, CH4, and ethane, CH3CH3, are members of a family of compounds called alkanes. If you remove a hydrogen atom from one of these you get an alkyl group.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah butane is a 4 carbon compound with single bonded carbon and yeah as we remove 1 hydrogen from ethane we get ethyl this compound is known as 4 ethyl butane as ethyl group is attached to the 2nd carbon of butane

OpenStudy (abmon98):

good job :) Yes thats right now have a try drawing its structure

Ok welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey did u got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Abmon98?

OpenStudy (abmon98):

yes.

Where's my medal then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks then

OpenStudy (aaronq):

There is a mistake in the question, the compound 2-ethylbutane doesnt exist. |dw:1405801969006:dw|

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The longest chain is not butane but pentane. |dw:1405802114257:dw|
