There are 4 pints of green paint in a gallon bucket. The paint is made from equal amounts of yellow paint and blue paint. To create a different shade of green, the mixture needs to be 80% yellow. How many pints of yellow paint need to be added to the bucket to make the mixture 80% yellow?
how many gallons are ther?
Just one
are there multiple choice (just making sure)
No there isn't.
k what do we know so far?
we know that there are only 4 pints so this means there is going to be a fraction
@Concentrationalizing jesus christ what are you typing that takes you this long? @.@
yes from what i know it has to be a ratio
3/4 = 75% right?
so that means if 1 equals 25% and we need 5% of it
we will need 3 and 1/5
did that help you?
@rojeliosolis did you get it?
Yes Thank you!!!
So i need 3 and 1/5 pints to make the paint yellow
3 and 1/5? That wouldnt be the correct answer. Should I post my explanation?
yes, please
See if this makes sense. If not I can break it down more: So, right now you have 4 gallons of paint. Because it tells you that you have equal parts yellow and blue, this must mean that the paint is 50% yellow, 50% blue, meaning out of the 4 gallons of paint, 2 of those gallons are yellow. So when we add some amount of yellow paint, lets call this quantity x, then the amount of yellow paint will increase by x and also the total amount of paint will increase by the same amount. The amount of yellow we end up with must be 80 percent of the total. So if the amount of yellow we have is 2+x and the total amount of paint is 4+x, then the equation we can solve is 2+x = .8(4+x)
so that means i need 6 pints to make it yellow right?
Yes, exactly. And we can even check that answer. If we start with 4 gallons of paint and add 6, we end up with 10 total gallons. Because we started with 2 gallons of yellow, adding 6 gallons means we now have 8 gallons of yellow. So 8/10 gallons of paint is yellow, which is the 80% we want.
Got it thanks!
No problem :)
