They are used to find the longitude and latitude which means too find the exact location.

So basically you use the coordinate system to find the exact location. So for example, lets say John is at 1234 longitude and Y:5678 latitude, you put those coordinates into, lets say a GPS, the GPS will mark the exact location John will be at. Makes sense?
