not always:) the vulcanization of rubber, newtons laws of motion, penicillin drug, super conductivity etc are not intended to be discovered.this are called serendipity discovery.
Yes , some are even accidental

when they discover it the were not knowing what it made off, its nature and properties so they just called it "X"(unknown) and the name remains same till now :P
