What is the importance of vectors in aviation and weather forecasting?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both of these have to do with the direction of moving air. When you hear a weather forecaster, he/she says that the windspeed is say 9 mi/h southwest. That is a vector. For aviation, the aircraft have to be able to sustain torrents of air coming straight at them and from different directions while maintaining a consistent altitude and direction. For weather forecasting, the direction of the moving air determines where fronts move and the magnitude determines when it will reach a certain city. Hope that helps.
