Ok, The reason for the D-Day invasion was the US military's desire a decisive showdown with Hitler. The only place that could happen was in Northern Europe. Also by the Spring of 1944 the Russians were pounding in from the East. If the Americans didn't get ashore in Northern Europe in the Spring of 1944 the Russians might be in Berlin by the following spring. The Allies wouldn't even have a seat at the peace talks. The consequences were the destruction of the Third Reich. Hitler had no hope of defending Germany on three fronts
