Okay, do you know how to use cos, sin, and tan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well this is a problem that has to do with those trig functions. In this case, you are trying to find x. Therefore you are going to be using 42, since it is across from x, as the number next to cos/sin/tan. To remember what each function does it's good to remember the phrase: SOH CAH TOA opp/hyp adj/hyp opp/adj In your problem, the x is opposite from 42 and the only real number close-by is adjacent to the 42, therefore you are working with a tan problem. The way to set up your equation is: tan 42= x/35 (since it is opp/adj) Then you must multiply 35 on both sides since you want the x value to be alone. 35 (tan 42)=x If you use a calculator, you can then find out that the answer should be about 80.
