Welcome to Openstudy. :) The Battle of Little Bighorn was famous in U.S. History because of the outcome of the battle! If the 7th Calvary had won the battle it would be an obscure footnote in American History. To Americans of the time the defeat of the superior US Calvary at the hands of plains Indians was a complete and utter shock. In the sports world it would been tantamount to a mediocre college football team defeating a team in the NFL. Although, the Battle of Little Bighorn is an embarrassment to the US Army, the few Native Americans I know take considerable pride in its outcome.
