Is crumpling a sheet of paper a physical or chemical change? Why?

OpenStudy (asib1214):

physical change because even if you crumple the paper.

OpenStudy (asib1214):

it's still a paper.

For it to be called a chemical reaction a new product must form. For example, breaking a rock makes the rock smaller changing it's physical appearance, but it is still a rock, nothing has changed.

OpenStudy (asib1214):

@ZDoubleM correct.

@mikey69 btw a change in state is also a physical change. For example, ice (solid H2O) to water (liquid H2O) is a physical change and so is water to vapor (gaseous H2O).
