1st step you do: Isolate the variable

1) subtract 3 from both sides 2) divide both sides by -4

Do this by having the variable x stand alone on it's side of the equation

As @SolomonZelman pointed out, you would subtract 3 first as it will leave -4x by its self

On that side of the equation

Then since 4x is basically the same as \[4 \times x\] you would do the opposite, dividing
