Japan no longer had enough resources to properly defend itself or to provide food and medicine for it's people. The waves of bombings in March and May of 1945. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Soviet Union's declaration of war on Japan. The Japanese government had sought to surrender earlier but would not agree to the allied ultimatum, the Potsdam Declaration. After finally seeing the writing on the wall, the Japanese agreed to surrender unconditionally.
