Well, for the first one I know that both mudslides and tropical diseases were big setbacks for them. But, considering malaria, the yellow fever, and the bubonic plague were some of these diseases, and resulted in MANY more deaths than mudslides and were pretty much un-avoidable at the time, diseases were a bigger setback than the mudslides and cave-ins that occured
