The New York City Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the country. Many people work long hours to bring it all together. Lots of details have to be considered as they prepare, from clearing the route for safe passage of the runners to arranging for enough water to keep them all hydrated.
For the 1984 New York City Marathon, the weather was unusually warm and humid. Water stations ran out of cups, causing many runners to get dehydrated. To ensure that didn’t happen again, 1.5 million cups of water were ordered for the 1990 marathon. One of the biggest factors affecting planning of the marathon is predicting how many competitors to expect. To do this, numbers from the past are used to predict the future!
