YW is the altitude to the hypotenuse XZ. http://secure.starssuite.com/files/geo2010/Geom_10S_Fig25.jpg What is the length of XY? What is the length of YZ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

XY = geometric mean of XW and XZ

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\[\large XY = \sqrt{XW*XZ}\]

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\[\large XY = \sqrt{3*7}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! but do you do the same thing for yz?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes ! take the geometric mean of `near segment` and the `entire hypotenuse` : \[\large YZ = \sqrt{WZ * XZ}\]

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

plugin the values ^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

what do u get for YZ ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 4.58 for both of them

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you should get XY = sqrt(21) = 4.58

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

YZ should be different
