Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence is a representative piece of Enlightenment writing that demonstrates the great influence that the work of John Locke must have had on him. Jefferson adapted Locke’s concept of an inherent “contract” between the rulers and the ruled, explaining how rulers only rule through the consent of the governed. This means that they enjoy the “right” to change the terms of this contract. He used this idea of a contract to justify the revolt against King George III and the formation of an independent confederation of former colonies that became the United States. John Locke and Thomas Jefferson had very similar views about life and people’s rights. John Locke believed that people were not born evil; they are made one or the other by their life experiences and society around them. He also believed every person has right to life, liberty, and property. Thomas Jefferson believes that every person is made by the choices they make in life, not naturally by birth, whether they will be good or evil. Thomas Jefferson also believes every person has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. John Locke and Thomas Jefferson had the relatively same ideas on how the government should be run. John Locke believed every person is free and equal at birth. He thought rulers should get the right to rule from the citizens, and the citizens have the right to overthrow the ruler ifthe “natural rights” are violated. Thomas Jefferson believed relatively the same thing. He thought democracy, and not absolute monarchy, was the right way to govern. Even though John Locke and Thomas Jefferson shared their views of the government, life, and people’s rights, there were some differences between them. John Locke lived in England from 1632-1704. Thomas Jefferson lived from 1743-1826. Although he was originally born in England, he was an American. John Locke and Thomas Jefferson played different roles in their countries. John Locke was mainly a philosopher and thinker, while Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father of America, writing the Declaration of Independence and becoming the third president.
