This would be easier to explain with an example I think. Suppose the population refers to a school's graduating class, i.e. the population is all the seniors of a given school, that is required to take a some sort of exam. You have the mean and standard deviation - suppose the mean score (out of 100) is 65, and the standard deviation is 10.
