What event occurred in Tiananmen Square in 1989? A Communist group led its followers to the square and took Mao Zedong hostage. Pro-democracy protesters were killed by government troops. Mao Zedong held a parade honoring the intellectuals. War began with the Soviet Union.

Pro-democracy protesters were killed by government troops. The rest of the world refers to it as the Tianenmen Massacre, but internally within China, it's hardly referenced at all in any official capacity. If you do a search for "tank man" on Google, you'll see a pic of one guy holding up a column on tanks.
