Use the definition of continuity to determine whether f is continuous at a. \[f(x) = 5x^4 - 9x^3 + x - 7a = 7\] A. Not continuous B. Continuous

Help please? ♥

OpenStudy (kainui):

What does the definition of continuity state?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it means to go on... something like progress or just non stop. Are you asking me to actually get the definition lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Continuity: the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time.

OpenStudy (kainui):

"Use the definition of continuity" It says in your question you need to use the definition. What you've just posted is not a mathematical definition at all. Look in your book or notes and find the definition you should be using, as it is a precise mathematical statement.

Ooooh I assumed it was supposed to be mathematical but I was always pick the latter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

excuse my typo's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first find the limit of f(x) as x goes to 7 from both the left and right side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

evaluate f(7) and check if it is equal to the limit value. if so it is continuous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

polynomials are continuous for all real numbers. Therefore, it is continuous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oooh I see. Thank you very much for explaining.
