can someone tell me if i did this right? I got the answer 15 Find the value of x to the nearest whole number. http://secure.starssuite.com/files/geo2010/Geom_11S_Fig15.jpg

OpenStudy (aum):

How many decimal places they want the answer in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (aum):

tan(40) = opposite / adjacent = x / 19 x = 19 * tan(40) Set your calculator to degree mode (not radians), calculate tan(40), multiply by 19 and round your answer to 3 decimal places.

OpenStudy (aum):

Since they want up to 3 decimal places, 15 is not the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i got 15.94 so it would be 16 right?

OpenStudy (aum):

You said they wanted the answer up to 3 decimal places. Look at the 4th decimal place. If it 5 or more add 1 to the third decimal place and give your answer in the form 15.ddd

OpenStudy (aum):

Calculator says 19 * tan(40) = 15.9428929924 4th decimal place is 8 which is \(\ge\) 5. So add 1 to the 3rd decimal place. So it is 15.943 x = 15.943
