why I thought that was my answer was because I thought that when you split a 90 degree angle the angle equals 45

yes, that is true. It's probably a property of kites, but we can prove it this way. the top triangle ABC is congruent to the bottom triangle ADC by side-side-side therefore the corresponding angles are = (and they add up to 90º)
