what is a stroke caused by?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is interrupted or reduced. This deprives your brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can cause your brain cells to die. A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a leaking or burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

OpenStudy (nurali):

Strokes can be one of two types, ischaemic, which are by far the most common are the "heart attacks" of the brain, in which an artery gets blocked by a Blood clot (thrombus), cutting off blood flow to the brain tissue and resulting in its death within minutes. Haemorrhagic strokes on the other hand are much less common but far more dangerous within the first hours, and result from the bursting of a brain artery, leading to bleeding onto the brain, build up of pressure and sometimes shutting off of the breathing centers due to compression of the brainstem.

If your brain doesn't get enough oxygen, it has a stroke.
