How many words do you need to write an novel? What type of font and size?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is how many words I have now. http://prntscr.com/46ul60

@inkyvoyd

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

There's no set limit to the amount of words you need in a novel. There are novels that have around 200 pages to over a thousand pages. There's many different font sizes for books, usually they range from 12-16 sometimes you can order books that have a larger font size than that. Now, for words... How many words would you expect there to be on a page? Anywhere from 150-500 right? You can take that and figure out how many words should be needed depending on how long of a novel/book you want to write.

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

I meant 10-16 font size lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm currently using font size 11. And there's a lot of words so I'm going to continue using that font size and see where it gets me. I've been writing this book for 4-6 months now. So probably in the next 3 months I'll probably stop and Thank you @beccaboo333

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sometimes books have over 100,000 pages O_O

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Well it also depends on the size the book will be too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's true.

OpenStudy (anonymous_user):

Whoa, a book with over 100,00 pages? That is just crazy. I agree with Becca, a novel has no limits. My mom's friend wrote a book and I think she used 'Times New Roman' as her font and 12 for the size.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup, 100,000 pages. I guess the sky isn't the limit.

OpenStudy (anonymous_user):

Yup.

OpenStudy (shamil98):

You shouldn't bias your book off of word count. Writing is an art. Let the words be written till there is no more to write (excluding unnecessary words and whatnot of course). Some novels are short--some long. Depends completely on what you think, when you feel that you found a sufficient ending to your novel then that's that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, Inky.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

"Novel over 40,000 words Novella 17,500 to 40,000 words Novelette 7,500 to 17,500 words Short story under 7,500 words"

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

@shamil98 , suck it

OpenStudy (shamil98):

inky stop being childish

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

@shamil98 that's like saying my profile picture will regularly change from being an invisible hedgehog

OpenStudy (larseighner):

60,000 words is a slim first novel size. 80-90,000 is probably about an average in most genres. Big blockbuster beach novels often hit more than 200,000. The font is determined by the publisher's book designer. The author is not consulted. The manuscript should be prepared in a non-weird family (such as Times Roman) in 12pt.

OpenStudy (shamil98):

I agree with god. ^
