OpenStudy (tywower):

Plant growers sometimes sterilize their potting soil by heating it to high temperatures to kill pathogens that might be in the soil. How might heat sterilization of the soil affect the amount of nitrate available to tomato plants grown in that soil? The amount of nitrate would remain constant as long as air was in contact with the soil. The plants would have more nitrates available since no other organisms would be competing for them. The amount of nitrate would slowly increase in the soil as the plant roots broke down the soil. The plants would have fewer nitrates

available since the nitrate-producing bacteria were also killed.
