I don't understand Example 1 on pg. 313 in section 6.3 Applications to Differential Equations. I get how the eigenvalues are 1 and -1 and how to get the respective eigenvectors. What I don't get is the part where it talks about combining the scalar equations into y + z and y - z. Thanks!
