not everyone liked it obviously but it had moral behind it

they put their duty to humanity before personal safety which is a commendable trait and an uncommon one at that

The American public never wanted to be involved in a large scale war in Europe where millions of people were dying but, when the Lusitania was sunk by an early German submarine, the United States went to war with Germany and Austria. The public was outraged by the German attack and was happy to fight in the war, for the most part. Many men enlisted after the Lusitania was sunk.
