Classify each of the following as a homogeneous mixture, heterogeneous mixture, element, or compound: (a) table salt, (b) blood, (c) steel, (d) planet Earth. @abb0t

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, let's do each word first: \(\sf \color{red}{homogeneous}\) = same, as the prefix implies, "homo" means same. \(\sf \color{purple}{heterogeneous}\) = "hetero" means different Now, let us do the first and second one to see how this works and you can do C, and D, yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Table salt would be homogeneous - because you only have one thing in table salt, NaCl (table salt). Blood would be heterogeneous, because it is composed of a variety of things! Such as platletes, and other biological compounds.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Now, you try C and D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

steel would be an element and planet earth would be the compound

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Yes, and since it is an element, that would mean it is composed of one thing (they're all the same), making it a _____________ mixture. And earth is not really a compound, but rather, think of what it is composed of, MANY things, right? Humans, animals, mountains, plants, bacteria, etc...That would mean it is composed of many DIFFERENT things, which would make it a ________________ mixture.

huh? I got an appointment i'll read your explanation when i get back
