Need help with math hmu

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

u need help

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

yes actually

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

Simplify the given expression: (−5 + 3i) • (1 − 2i) I've been having trouble with these... I use FOIL and then combine like terms but the answer I come up with is never an option. These are my four options the closest one to my answer is the second one. −5 − 6i 1 + 13i 2 + i 4 − 5i

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

@abbyrose0105 try simplifying this

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

@abbyrose0105 simplify −6x2+13x−5

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

is that -6x^2? is the x squared?

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

yes

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

x=i srry

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

so x is an imaginary number?

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

kinda yes

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

ok I'll try

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

alright

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

It should be 1+13i

OpenStudy (abbyrose0105):

If x=i then you can substitute i for x making the problem look like this: -6i^2+13i-5 i^2=-1 so that would make -6(-1)=6, 6-5=1 and 1+13i cannot be added because 13i and 1 are considered different numbers

OpenStudy (mlgpro):

good job
