your welcome
The Allies had defeated the Germans in North Africa. The knew that they could not invade into France or Germany at this time. They wanted to attack Italy and force it out of the war, which is what happened. Also, Churchill called Italy the "soft underbelly" of Europe. He thought the Allies could land in Italy and advance all the way to Vienna in just a few months. Another reason was that UK and US promised to help Russia by attacking the Germans where they could and tieing up more troops. The Russians were fighting large German forces by themselves. Opening a front in Italy would require Germany to send more troops to Italy and help the Russians. BTW, Russia was pushing for UK and US to make the invasion of France/Germany by 1943 but they were not ready until June 1944.
