Hey, Let's improve OpenStudy for the better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think openstudy can improve. I'm getting frustrated with some points of openstudy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Remove the chat feature, it's unnecessary and downright annoying to have it open up automatically.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Let's prevent homework questions and people asking for answers. It's annoying and just detrimental to our cause.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Let's enable a bounty system - using the medals that we have gained.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Have trusted users be able to flag duplicates and spam.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- A smoother GUI.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Feel free to list anymore.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

The chats are awesome, it's what makes OS what it is, and separates this websites from others. Pretty sure there's been a discussion about it many times before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup, so let's change this for the better. Who runs opens and develops openStudy. I'd like to talk to them about it. Let's have a poll to decide.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Luigi0210 I think that you can agree with my other points. No?

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

You can ignore everything you've just said, and the system is fine, lets not change all of OS just because one person is frustrated. - chat feature, you can minimize/ ignore. - homework questions and people asking for answers, you'll only find a few people who will actually ask questions which has nothing to do with school. The whole point of OS is to help users with their homework and lead them towards the right path...people will always ask just for answers, once again report/ ignore. - Bounty system, why should we use our medals, there's already a report feature on OS, or as always you can ignore. - Trusted users be able to flag, etc, it's called reporting, and a mod will eventually get to it (there's a reason mods exist) - Smoother GUI, good luck. So pretty much everything on this site annoys you and we should have to change it so it pleases you.

OpenStudy (eric_d):

Homework Questions.... It can be revision questions too! I think.. it shld nt be an issue

OpenStudy (eric_d):

Yes,I agree with you @Astrophysics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What I'm saying is simply, I think that there are some problems with the site that can be improved, I'm not saying let's cater it to me, I'm saying here's some stuff that could be improved that would be helpful to everyone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- chat feature, you can minimize/ ignore. Yes, you can ignore, but how hard is it for the people running OS to simply close everything and not automatically open everything. This is a suggestion from @tkhunny, who wanted to remove the chat feature.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- homework questions and people asking for answers, you'll only find a few people who will actually ask questions which has nothing to do with school. The whole point of OS is to help users with their homework and lead them towards the right path...people will always ask just for answers, once again report/ ignore. Why not make it easier on the server if we can do something that Stackoverflow does really well. Reduce redundancy by leading the asker to questions that have already been answered. I think having a voting system to also decided to close a system would be helpful.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

@eric_d Thanks :) @dta255 Eh, no worries, I see you have good intentions but everything you've mentioned would be a waste of time for the admins, the only problem that strikes me is the servers (amount of lag) at this time. That's a fine suggestion for the chat, but people need to learn to have self control, it only bothers him because he has to deal with the drama that comes with it, maybe he should've thought about taking the position of being a moderator more thoroughly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Bounty system, why should we use our medals, there's already a report feature on OS, or as always you can ignore. I think you misunderstand me. What about not just hoarding our medals for some random purpose. Every question has a different level of toughness and so some users will naturally be inclined to avoid them. Let's have a purpose for our medals and allow us to actually make use of them. Incentive to get more medals. So we reward more medals for people who correctly answer our questions the best.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Trusted users be able to flag, etc, it's called reporting, and a mod will eventually get to it (there's a reason mods exist) Mods are limited, far and few in between. Why not spread it out to more people who are have done well already.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- Smoother GUI, good luck. Again, what's the problem with improvement?

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

So are you trying to say harder questions should give hold more medals, that sounds cool, but would be hard to do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean that doesn't seem so bad to do. We don't know that strain this we have. At this point, I think it is unfair to simply shoot everything down as a waste of time. We don't know the benefits or the drawbacks fully. Everything uses resources and server time. Including you and me.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

If you have any suggestions, post them here: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/5377b7d5e4b0ba022d36af38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But to say we use server and admin time, and that therefore saying that you and I shouldn't exist is bad reasoning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We actually provide for OS.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

Actually your just giving ideas, but the resource and such is up to the admins, they spend the time and effort to make it possible for us. Well by providing you mean volunteering, you don't have to do it, and that has nothing to do with your suggestions other than the ideas itself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's wrong with suggesting ideas? They might provide the resources, but it's not like I am forcing them to.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

You seem to be twisting my words, there is nothing wrong with suggesting ideas, just the ones you imply would be rather difficult or can be easily ignored, it's useless man power at this point.

OpenStudy (paki):

@dta255 no idea is wrong... these are ideas and are good... and @Astrophysics be cool... don't argue guys.... @thomaster please have a look here at the ideas...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@paki Hey paki, thanks for the mediation. It really helps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the measure, I don't really think this was a full-scale argument, but we were both trying to effectively clarify each of our messages.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

I'll give you one thing, if I understand your bounty idea, you want people to be able to get more medals for tougher questions right? I actually like this, but only way I see this to work is if a moderator themselves goes on a particular question and maybe activates a bounty (so only the moderator can see a bounty button and activate it). Otherwise many people would be doing medal parties and taking advantage of it, this I really like though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't mind the chats, but I don't want them all at the bottom of my screen lagging me up.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Thanks.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

One of the main reasons for the chats is to keep people from spamming other topics when they can't find someone to help. Keeping the chats for this is useful, but I personally would like some changes to them. 1) Make the max posting size 300 instead of 600. 2) Improve the filter system. \(\quad\)a) Add a white list for good words that include bad letter combos. \(\quad\)b) Make repeated offenses of 100% matches cause a 1 hour self-suspension, no reports needed. \(\quad\)c) Make a gray list/heuristic system that randomly (not statically) morphs words into random letters. 3) Put a delay time between chats that is 70 - SS seconds. 4) Eliminate the 1 chat per topic and make something like 4 or 5 universal chats. 5) Make it so the chat bar can be closed to the side.

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Have fun trying to take out the chats :p

thomaster (thomaster):

they won't be taken out silly :p

OpenStudy (compassionate):

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@camerondoherty Actually, they came very close to doing so before and the consensus in the User Advisory Council was that the negative side would be minimal when contrasted to the benefits. With the problems the chats have been causing going on the rise, I am not at all surprised people have been talking about it again.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I agree we need to keep a social atmosphere on OpenStudy, but we don't really need a million chats. Maybe just group it all together.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Yeah! Just 2-4 different chats would be nice. It can also help the mods monitor the chats a bit easier.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

I barely use the chats. The only thing I do is say "Hi" and I rarely do even that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I loooooveeeeeeeee the chat ideas that @e.mccormick has shared

OpenStudy (demonchild99):

the chat doesnt open if you dont click on it.......

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, but it is still a source of argument and language that cause problems for OpenStudy.

OpenStudy (demonchild99):

yeah...but i like the chats cuz kids who are homeschooled...like me can socialize instead of being bored all day

OpenStudy (greencat):

The chats sometimes block the post button, forcing users to press tab-enter. There could be an option to move closed chats to the side, next to the scroll bar, because that space is empty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is nothing wrong with the chats I found my friends there so I find nothing wrong with the chats.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Yeah. You can read the whole post and find out the problems.
