Can someone check me again, please?! Thank you so much in advance! Assume a plane is flying directly north @ 200 mph, but there is a wind blowing west at 23 mph. Part I: express both the velocity of the plane & the velocity of the wind as vectors, using proper notation to represent each direction of motion. I got: plane= <0,200> mph & wind= <-23, 0> mph. Part II: What is the velocity vector of the plane? I got: actual= plane + wind which led me to <0,200> Part III: What is the ground speed of the plane? I got <0,200> + <-23,0> mph which led me to: <-23, 200>

OpenStudy (phi):

Everything looks good, except for Part III the speed is equivalent to the length (magnitude) of the velocity vector

OpenStudy (phi):

and for part II, I assume you mean velocity vector= plane + wind which led me to <-23,200>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! sorry, that's what i meant for part II! would that mean that the answer is 201.32 for part II? @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part III*

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, 201.32 mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much! There's just one last part to the problem, where i have to sketch the velocity vectors of the plane and the new direction of the plane on the axes. I have to label the plane's original velocity as vplane, the wind velocity as vwind, and the resultant velocity as v. would that mean that i would label <0, 200> as vplane and <-23, 0> as vwind and the resultant velocity as <-23, 200> on the graph and then connect the points? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, roughly like this |dw:1406921562291:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!! @phi
