It's alright first you would isolate the absolute value so subtract 15 into 18 then divide by 3

or 
x-8=-1
with absolute values you get 2 answers because the absolute value can turn the solution positive or negative as shown above
Lets solve the first one
add 8 to 1 so 
x=9
now in the second one add 8 to -1 so
