Well, in the context of the reactions of the women, we can look at the emotions to get a fairly accurate idea of which one it is: horror and surprise. In the context of a comedy one can certainly expect emotions to be exaggerated for effect; this would make A a possible answer. However, I doubt this is a comedy. In certain contexts one could expect B or C to merit a response such as the one given but that takes personal embellishment: such as the possible realisation of both of the women that the subject has suicidal tendencies or that the apron is poisoned. D, however, gives a setting where those emotions can be expected. Furthermore, such reactions are warranted. So I would say D.
