Why is a stationary called stationary? sounds stupid I know but I'm having trouble expressing this...

OpenStudy (lasttccasey):

Well stationary simply means `fixed in a station`. From the 14th-15th century the word \(\it{ station }\) comes from \(\it{ stare }\) which means \(\it{ to }\) \(\it{ stand }\). So standing still, without motion, is why I'd say its called stationary. Hope that helps some.

By the way it comes from Latin.
