how do i find the domain and range of a function?

OpenStudy (asevilla5):

Domain is the x value and the range is the y value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do i answer it if the function reads F(X)=2/x^2-2x-3? do i write (for range) all real numbers except for +3?

OpenStudy (asevilla5):

First you write the equation as this f(x) = 2 / (x²−2x−3) , f(x) = 2 / ((x+1)(x−3))

OpenStudy (asevilla5):

Domain: (x+1) (x−3) ≠ 0 x ≠ −1 and x ≠ 3 (−∞, −1) U (−1, 3) U (3, ∞)
