Determine if the following line are parallel Y=3x+5 Y-3+7=0
2 lines with the same slope are parrallel
could you tell me the steps
the second line you posted is actually a vertical line :P
slope is how y increases for a change in x
for example y=3x+5 chuck the 5 out.. since its always gonna add 5 to our solutions y=3x is interesting y is changing by a factor of 3*x so 3 is known as the slope This is the definition of a slope.
if you think about finding the slope by looking at 2 points, for equation y=3x+5 then u have points of the form (x,3x+5) then if you take any 2 points say with x1,x2 (x1,3x1+5) , (x2,3x2+5) then seeing as slope is how y is changing with respect to x 3x2+5 - (3x1+5) ------------- = as you can see the +5 cancel out on the top x2-x1 This is why the +5 is not playing any role the slope you get will be the same as if you had chosen y=3x giving us points of form (x,3x) 3x2-3x1 3x2+5 - (3x1+5) -------- = slope = ------------- x2-x1 x2-x1
