For a longer explanation, the Republican party was formed by two separate parties being the "Know Nothing" party and the remains of the Whig party which broke down two years earlier in 1852. The "Know Nothing" party was compromised of people who were afraid that the growing influence of German and Irish Catholic would hinder or overpower the Republican values in America.
