can someone help me with a geometry question?

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Maybe. It depends on the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the question

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

(x+13) + (x+4) = 11 solve for x first, then use that to get length of HI

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x would be -3 so then what do i do?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well what does diagram say that HI is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+4?

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Plug it in!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

no that would be IJ ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+13?

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -3+13?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes, so you see how the "x+13" is located above the line segment HI

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 10?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks can you help me with another question?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

sure you did the hard part solving for "x" on your own, you might not need any help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just want to make sure every things right

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok what did you get for x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i did it wrong

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

how did you set up the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-6+2x-5=13

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk what i did wrong

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

--> 3x -11 = 13

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

how do you know you are wrong...what do you get for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got like a decimal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i got 8

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

oh ok, yes it should be a whole number 8 is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i do 8-6?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 2

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay sorry i have 2 more would you help me?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok but im not helping you, just verifying your answers :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yes

OpenStudy (littlebird):

I think these problems would be easier for you if you listed everything that the picture tells you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (littlebird):

For example, you can see that PQ=9

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

tell me what you get for x 9 + 2x+33 = x+30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

nope , this time you are wrong can you show your work so i know where you went wrong

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Did you understand how dumbcow formed that equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm doing it on my iPad let me figure out how i can take a picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the picture came out backwards

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

that will work, i can read upside down or rotate it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats itt a little messy sorry!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

no its fine ... what happened is you subtracted 9 instead of adding it notice how the "9" and "33" are both on left hand side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i subtract the 33? to the 9

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

hmm lets try this 9 + 2x+33 = x+30 --> 2x + (9+33) = x+30

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

there is no subtraction sign, its all adding on left side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i distribute ?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

no just add like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -4?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

let me help by showing the work 2x + 9+ 33 = x + 30 2x + 42 = x +30 2x -x = 30 - 42 x = -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 9

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

correct do you see why there is no subtraction....i think you were over complicating it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeaa i see!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22?

OpenStudy (littlebird):

I'll check

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okk

OpenStudy (littlebird):

I got 6. What did you do to get 22? Maybe I did something crazy with my math.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

6 is correct @Littlebird

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ughh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did i do wrong

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

show the equation and how you got your "x" value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ahh i see, ok now you are adding when you should be subtracting

OpenStudy (littlebird):

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

when moving to other side of equal sign is when you flip the sign or do opposite operation --> 2x + 26+12 = x+28 same side with plus sign ... add --> 2x +38 = x+28 diff side with plus or positive sign ... subtract --> 2x -x = 28 -38

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

thanks Littlebird for image ... follow that it shows correct steps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i get 10

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Don't you mean -10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (littlebird):

What is the equation for ST only?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x+26

OpenStudy (littlebird):

Plug in x, which is -10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh got it !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help with this

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

@rachel1217 here is a reference to help with solving equations http://www.purplemath.com/modules/solvelin.htm

OpenStudy (littlebird):

For the problem you are doing now, couldn't you look up the definitions of the things it is asking you for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but its not asking for the definitions

OpenStudy (littlebird):

You can use definitions to help find the answers.

OpenStudy (littlebird):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have answers i just want to make sure my answers are correct

OpenStudy (littlebird):

What did you put as the answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15. cd 16.de 17.cde 18.c,r,d,e 19. c,r,e 20, c and cde

OpenStudy (littlebird):

For 20. I would have answered with something like line CD and line DC

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i need help with these
