Rising actions – is carried to a place of dampness, flatness and madness; discovery of pit and near fall; is strapped to a board and discovers pendulum; pendulum, rats, walls get hot

First the narrator describes investigating his dank cell, accidentally finding a deep pit just before falling in. Second rising action he wakes strapped to a table and is forced to watch a sharply bladed pendulum lower toward him, then he lures rats to chew his bindings so he can escape. The final rising action occurs after he wakes again to find the cell walls heating up.
