If the length of each side of a cube is halved, is the surface area halved? Use an example to support your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

surface area of cube is x^2 * 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, lets say that the side is 4. The surface area would be 4^2*6, which is 96

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, lets cut 4 in half, to see if the surface are is cut in half as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2^2*6=24

OpenStudy (mokeira):

One cube has a side of, for example 18cm. Its surface area will be \[18^{3}\] =5832 so the other will have side of 9cm, with surface area of \[9^{3}\] 729 you can see that the surface area is not half the original

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It isn't cut in half, but it is cut into 1/4ths. So no, it is not cut in half.
