This comes directly from the triangle midsegments thm, which says that the length of the midsegment is half the length of the base. When you draw that midsegmet triangle, you've just drawn three midsgmts which are each half of their corresponding bases, but those bases make the original perimeter, so your triangle has half the perimeter!
