using the 1st equation

x = 7 seems to be a solution....

but when you substitute it into the equation.... what happens...?

I put the negatives on the wrong side. They're meant to encapsulate the (2x-18)

(-4x+24) = 2x - 18
(-4x+24) = -(2x - 18)

well if you distribute you get

4x - 24 = 2x - 18

subtract 2x from both sides

2x - 24 = -18

add 24 to both sides

2x = 6

solve for x

then substitute it into the original equation to see if it makes sense

When I put the negative on the left hand side I got x = 3 & x = 7
on the right hand side, I got x=-1 & x=-21

none of which make sense
