It deals with change.  That change can be in position, so coordinates.  It can also be things like this:

Let us say you have a large pot of water on a burner.  The top is a different temperature from the bottom because heat is added at the bottom and removed at the top.  Without taking temperature measures throughout, how can you find the average temperature or the temperature at any height?  What if the pot is not a cylinder, but is a cauldron, where the diameter changes from base to lip?  Calculus can solve this because it looks at the change in volume and temperature.
