Decide whether the given x value is a zero of the function. f(x) = x^3 + 3x^2 – 5x + 8; x = 4 Select one: a. No, because there is more than one zero . b. No, because substituting the value does not balance the equation. c. Yes, because substituting the value does balance the equation. d. none of the above

?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

You can tell if a value of x is a zero of the function by plugging the number in and simplifying. If it simplifies to 0, it is a zero.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

What do you get when you plug in x=4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

I get bigger than that, but either way, it is not equal to 0, so x=4 is not a zero.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind i got 144

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

I guess balancing the equation could mean equaling zero but I'm not too familiar with that terminology.
