SAT Question: A rectangular container has a base that is 10 cm by 4 cm and a height of 20 cm. If the tank is half full of water, by how many cm will the water rise if 300 cm^3 are poured into the tank?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... so the volume of the prism is V 10 x 4 x 20 = 800 cm^3 which is 800 mL so if its half full it contains 400 ml. and the height is 10cm adding 300ml means the volume is 700 cm^3 so 700 = 10 x 4 x h h = 70/4 or the new height is 17.5 cm so by adding 300ml the height has increase from 10cm to 17.5cm... how far is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see thanks. i forgot to half the height to 10 cm and that's why i couldn't solve it.
