So something like:
By using the phrase 'stinging darts of segregation', Martin Luther King Jr allows the audience to understand how the discrimination he faced felt. Since he is aiming the sentence at people who haven't been discriminated for their race, the use of a metaphor enables these people to understand what it felt like, having never experienced it themselves.
