alg 2 help What are the discontinuities of the function f(x) = the quantity x squared minus 16 over the quantity 4x minus 24 ?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well factor both the numerator and denominator and simplfy discontinuities occur in the denominator so find the values of x that make the denominator zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the numerator is (x-6)(x+6) and the denominator is 4(x-6) @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so a discontinuity occurs at x = 6 becuase you would have a zero denominator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about this one What is the oblique asymptote of the function f(x) = the quantity x squared plus 5x plus 6 over the quantity x minus 4 ? @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... if you do some polynomial division or synthetic division you get the oblique asymptote |dw:1407441227728:dw| ignore the remainder and the oblique asymptote is the quotient so y = x + 1
