how to calculate effective resistance?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

The equations are different for the configuration of the circuit. Here is a good explanation: http://www.miniphysics.com/effective-resistance-resistors.html

OpenStudy (midhun.madhu1987):

If Resistors are connected in series, then effective resistance is the sum of individual resistors. R = R1 + R2 + R3 +.... If Resistors are connected in parallel, then effective resistance is the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistors. 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + ....
